Believe

“ . . . those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. . .” John 5:24

“ I tell you the truth, anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!” John 8:51

“If you love me, obey my commandments.” John 14:15

“Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me.” John 14:21

Love

“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.” John 13:34

Follow

Jesus tells Philip “Come, follow me.” John 1:43

 Remember

“Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I wil come back to you again.” John 14:28

 Remain

“Remain in me, and I will remain in you.” John 15:4

“Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.” John 15:9

Verbs are important because when we are commanded to do something we are commanded to a verb, an action. We are commanded to believe, listen, obey, love, teach, etc. All of the commands provided by Jesus tell us what we should be doing to be in obedience and relationship with Him.

Jesus refers to Himself as the great and uniquely powerful “I Am.” I am is a verb. Jesus says He is existing. We have heard He is the living God, He has always been and always will be. He is the verb Himself. Jesus says He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. What that means for us- He has always existed, He will always exist, and His word in the Bible is timeless.

The verbs of the Gospel are also timeless. Jesus tell us to believe and obey multiple times. We are to not stop believing, obeying, and seeking Him. Going outside the Gospel of John, we see in 1st Corinthians 13, we are to love with perseverance- without stopping.
